Danny DeVito Pens a Penguin Story for Batman Villain’s 80th Anniversary

Danny DeVito, who played Oswald Cobblepot in 1992’s Batman Returns, is writing a Penguin story for the upcoming Gotham City Villains Anniversary #1.

Danny DeVito, who portrayed the Penguin in 1992’s Batman Returns, is returning to the role of Oswald Cobblepot as a writer.

His story will appear in Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant #1, a 96-page anthology filled with tales centered around Batman’s rogues gallery. DC’s November solicits teased stories focused on the Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, Talia al Ghul, the Mad Hatter, Killer Moth, and the original Red Hood. Headlining all of these villains is the Penguin, who celebrates his 80th anniversary in December.

“This has been one of the coolest experiences of my life and I’m super excited for everyone to read,” DC’s Batman group editor Paul Kaminski tweeted, explaining that he had been working with DeVito and artist Dan Mora to craft the story.

Mora posted character designs for Catwoman and the Penguin, tweeting that he was also looking forward to people reading the upcoming story. Both villains shared the spotlight in Batman Returns, arguably receiving more scenes than Batman himself.

DeVito portrayed the Penguin as the lost son of two Gotham socialites, who had grown into a conniving criminal with a penchant for raw fish. Much of Batman Returns revolved around his attempt to run for Gotham City mayor, and DeVito was the second actor to play Oswald Cobblepot in live-action, following Burgess Meredith in the 1966 Batman television show.

Oswald Cobblepot was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane and first appeared in “One of the Most Perfect Frame-Ups,” a story in Detective Comics #58 in 1941. The portly monocle-wearing villain originally started as a thief who wields gimmick umbrellas. Eventually, he evolved into a more sophisticated mobster who owns the Iceberg Lounge, a classy Gotham nightclub that moonlights as a crime base.

Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant #1 goes on sale Nov. 30, featuring stories written by Danny DeVito, Wes Craig, G. Willow Wilson, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Joshua Williamson, Stephanie Phillips, Dan Watters, and Mairghread Scott.
