Daniil Medvedev apologised to Jannik Sinner after defeating him to lift the Miami Open title. It came after the Italian called the doctor early in the match, something the world No 5 said he noticed. Medvedev went on to win 7-5 6-3 and complimented his opponent on his previous match against Carlos Alcaraz.
Medvedev won his fourth title of the season in Miami, needing 94 minutes to defeat the 10th seed in straight sets. The 27-year-old went down a break early on but was able to get straight back on serve, while Sinner called the doctor to the court.
The 21-year-old appeared to take some medication before continuing the match as normal but didn’t look like himself at times, and later revealed he woke up feeling “sick”. After Medvedev picked up his 19th career title and first at the Miami Open, he was quick to apologise to Sinner after seeing him struggle earlier on.
“I’m sorry I saw that you were hurting or something,” he told the Italian. Medvedev then addressed Sinner’s three-set epic against Alcaraz in the semi-final, telling him: “An amazing match with Carlos, crazy.”
Sinner later confirmed that he woke up feeling unwell, preventing him from performing at his best. “We woke up this morning not at my best. I felt a little bit sick but thanks everyone for the support,” he told the crowd during his runner-up speech.
“Unfortunately I couldn’t play at my best but still, thank you so much and see you guys next year.” Medvedev then stepped up to give his victory speech and talked up Sinner’s match against Alcaraz again.
“As we heard from the crowd, I think everyone enjoyed the semi-final against Carlos. It was amazing,” he said, before admitting that it may have helped him out in the championship match.
Medvedev added: “I’m probably a little bit lucky because I was at this time already in bed watching both of you run all over the place so maybe today, I know it’s not easy to recover after such a match.”
The newly-crowned champion then admitted that he could see Sinner was struggling in a post-ceremony interview with Prime, saying it helped him overcome his own issues with the hot conditions. “Today Jannik was a little bit struggling and I could feel it at the end of the first set,” he explained.
“I looked at him and thought ‘wow, he might not be feeling better than me’ and I felt better straight away.”
