Dancing On Ice star Jason Gardiner ‘confronted Phillip Schofield’ over affair
However, he received a rather blunt response.
Phillip, 61, has been the talk of the nation over recent weeks, having admitted to an affair with a much younger male colleague, which started in 2017 when Phillip was still married and before coming out as gay.
He subsequently resigned from ITV due to lying to his colleagues and bosses about the relationship, which he has continued to insist was ‘not illegal’.
There were rumours of an affair between Phillip and the runner – who has not been named in the media for his privacy – for several years before the former daytime star confessed.
And in 2020, Jason says he sent Phillip a private message after hearing the whispers.
The Australian choreographer, 51 – who was an original judge on Dancing On Ice before leaving for good in 2019 – told The Sun that he DMed Phillip on Twitter.
He explained: ‘I went into a bit of a tailspin.’
‘I said, “I know this is a very difficult moment for you and I support you in your decision to come out, but I also feel that I need to ask you about certain rumours that are going around online and are you aware of them?”.’
He claims Phillip wrote back with a one-word message reading: ‘Seriously?’
‘That was it,’ Jason added.
‘It was very dismissive and that made me uneasy because I thought, “I’ve reached out to you very authentically”, and it kind of really p***ed me off.’
Jason didn’t explain any further whether he’s had contact with Phillip since.
Meanwhile, ITV is currently investigating his exit from the channel, the findings of which will be made public.
ITV executive Dame Carolyn McCall will also be questioned by MPs next week.
Their latest investigation comes after they claim to have looked into rumours of an affair between Phillip and the ex-colleague three years ago, but found no supporting evidence.
Although, the runner – who no longer works for the broadcaster – has denied being questioned, while Phillip also said there was no ‘formal’ investigation.
As for This Morning, a permanent replacement for Phillip has not yet been announced.
However, Holly Willoughby returned to the sofa this week after taking an early half-term break.
She was accompanied by Josie Gibson for two days, then Craig Doyle, while Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary returned to host their usual Friday slot after taking over in Holly’s absence.
Despite rumours, there doesn’t seem to be anything set in stone yet, with ITV stating that further announcements on future presenters of the show will be made ‘in due course’.
She only mentioned Phillip by name once and didn’t go into detail about the affair, despite claims that she had knowledge of what was going on, which both Phillip and Holly have denied.
Holly told viewers that she has been feeling ‘shaken, troubled, let down’ and ‘worried’ for the mental health of everyone involved in the matter.
But, she assured that the whole This Morning team will ‘continue to work hard every single day to bring you this show that we love.’
Holly Willoughby’s statement in full as she returns to This Morning after Phillip Schofield exit
‘Hi there, good morning. Josie, thank you for being here. Right, deep breath. Firstly, are you ok? I hope so. It feels very strange indeed sitting here without Phil.
‘I imagine that you might have been feeling a lot like I have – shaken, troubled, let down, worried for the wellbeing of people on all sides of what’s been going on and full of questions.
‘You me and all of us at This Morning gave our love and support to someone who was not telling the truth, who acted in a way that they themselves felt that they had to resign from ITV and step down from a career that they loved. That is a lot to process, and it’s equally hard to see the toll that it’s taken on their own mental health.
‘I think what unites us all now is a desire to heal, for the health and wellbeing of everyone.
‘I hope that we start this new chapter and get back to a place of warmth and magic that this show holds for all of us, we can find strength in each other.
‘From my heart, can I just say thank you for all of your kind messages and thank you for being here this morning. Myself, Josie, Dermot, Alison, Craig and every single person that works on this show will continue to work hard every single day to bring you this show that we love.’
