Dame Joan Collins has vowed not to judge Sex And The City star Chris Not following sexual assault allegations against him.
The 67-year-old actor had been accused of sexual assault by four women earlier this month, all of which he has denied, saying the claims are ‘categorically false’.
Dame Joan, 88, shared her thoughts on the claims in a recent Woman’s Hour podcast released on BBC Radio 4 on Christmas Day.
She was asked how she dealt with ’the advances’ of men in Hollywood, to which she revealed she would cope by ‘laughing a lot’ or ‘a stiff knee to the nether regions’ if necessary.
Dame Joan revealed that her father, Joseph Collins, a theatrical agent, had warned her of the way pretty women could be treated in the industry, adding that the men involved would have been ‘a lot more careful’ had they known about the #MeToo movement at the time.
Addressing the allegations against Noth, she commented: ‘Who knows what he did? I know him, and I’m not going to judge him, because who knows who these women are?
‘But his career is wrecked, absolutely wrecked, in doing what he did. I think that men — certainly men in my business – have to be quite a bit more careful, because we were abused.
‘It’s just that I happened to be a particularly tough person, so it did not fracture my life.’
Dame Joan had previously opened up about being sexually assaulted by her future husband Maxwell Reed when she was 17, who she accused of drugging and raping her while they were dating.
In a statement shared with Metro.co.uk, Noth said: ‘The accusations against me made by individuals I met years, even decades, ago are categorically false.
‘These stories could’ve been from 30 years ago or 30 days ago — no always means no — that is a line I did not cross. The encounters were consensual. It’s difficult not to question the timing of these stories coming out.
‘I don’t know for certain why they are surfacing now, but I do know this: I did not assault these women.’
