Cyclist is ‘punishment-passed’ by an HGV – but drivers are fuming at the rider

A SHOCKING video showing the moment an HGV made a dangerous pass on a cyclist as provoked an angry response from drivers.

The video was sent into Road.cc by a reader called Tim and was featured online on its Near Miss of The Day section and on YouTube.

The incident took place on a road near Guilford in Surrey and was filmed using a helmet camera.

The cyclist is choosing to ride on the road rather than a cycle lane to the left of him, but there’s nothing illegal about that.

Double white lines on the section of the road tell drivers they can’t overtake, but before long exactly that happens.

An HGV makes a very close pass on the brow of a hill and is also extremely close to a car coming the other way when it pulls out.

Tim told Road.cc: “Again and again, drivers don’t seem to get the message, and seem to have the ‘I own the road, get out of my way as mine is bigger than yours’ mentality.

“This is why vulnerable road users get injured or killed.”

But Road.cc reported that it was inundated with angry drivers fuming at the cyclist for his actions.

One driver said: “There would have been no need for this had the cyclist shown a bit of road sense and used the available road width in a manner conducive to other road users.

“All it takes is two entitled minds to cause a disaster so he is just as guilty as the truck driver of causing this near miss and should be equally held to account.”

Another who claimed to be an HGV driver themselves said: “I cycle and also drive HGVs for a living.

“If a cycle lane is provided then the cyclist should use it. If I drive my truck on the pavement then I can be fined and possibly lose my licence.

“If a cyclist doesn’t use the cycle lane expect to get a close pass!”

A particularly irate person emailed in with: “Great video of a daft p***k on a bike ignoring the bike lane on the left and then complaining about passing traffic!

“Total selfish two-wheeled t**t!!”

But even cyclists were having a pop, with one showing absolutely no sympathy for the rider.

They said: “If there is a cycle lane there, use it. Then you would have a right to moan.”
