Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Director Will Also Lead Development of the Sequel

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is setting out to address much of the criticism of the base game, and it seems like the development approach of the expansion will be kept for the next entry in the series, judging from something new that was confirmed today.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Game Director Gabe Abatangelo, with whom we spoke during the Summer Game Fest Play Days 2023, revealed that he will also direct the second entry in the series. Not much else has been added on the matter, and it is unlikely we will hear more about this game in the immediate future, considering how CDPR has its hands full developing a slew of new titles, including a few set in The Witcher universe.

As highlighted in the interview, the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Game Director’s rise has been incredibly fast and not without reason. Having joined the Polish company in 2020, Gabe Abatangelo lead the development of the game’s 1.5 patch, which addressed many of the issues that plagued the game since launch, and has been given the chance to make the expansion right, receiving as much time and resources as needed. “The commitment to it from a board level is something else, really,” Amatangelo said. “I was struck by the humility and willingness to change.” Gabe Abantangelo has been working hard to solve some of the company’s cultural issues, and things seem to be going well, as policies to prevent burning out have been implemented to create the healthy work-life balance the company needed.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty launches on September 26th on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S worldwide. The base game is now out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well.
