Cummins dethroned as 87-year record shattered
Australian captain Pat Cummins has lost his ranking as the world’s No.1 Test bowler, with 40-year-old James Anderson becoming the oldest player to take the top spot since 1936.
Cummins’ four-year reign as No.1 has ended following a difficult start to the series in India, which has seen the fast bowler claim just three wickets at 39.67.
In contrast, Anderson took 7/54 in England’s win over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui. He’s been a key part of the side which has won 10 of its last 11 matches, claiming 43 wickets at 17.84 since the start of 2022.

It’s the sixth time Anderson has claimed the world No.1 ranking, and he becomes the oldest player since Australia’s Clarrie Grimmett in 1936 to hold top spot.
During the Mount Maunganui Test, Anderson and Stuart Broad broke the record previously held by Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne for the most wickets taken in Test matches as a pair.
Cummins, who has returned home from India for personal reasons, has dropped two spots to No.3 in the rankings, with India’s Ravi Ashwin at No.2. Ashwin has taken 14 wickets at 13.92 in the two Tests against Australia to date.
His spin partner, Ravindra Jadeja, is up six spots to No.9. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood have each dropped one spot, to No.10 and No.12 respectively.
There’s little change in the batting rankings, with Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith still ranked No.1 and No.2, with the under-pressure David Warner also steady at No.20.
