Culture Day by Simona Valeva, Graveney School
The UK is a majorly diverse country, and that is especially true in London. There are over 300 languages spoken and countless nationalities, so it is very important to celebrate the different people that make the UK as diverse as it is.
During this day, students come into school in cultural clothing, bearing their national flags and cultural foods. Students can set up stalls and allow others to try out traditional dishes from their nation of origin. The students can inform and educate each other about their cultures. I found that some schools even had a fashion show where everyone could show off their cultural clothing. Some schools may even incorporate culture day into the classrooms, where students can learn about new cultures during their lessons.
Last year, my school’s music department celebrated music from around the world as well as fundraising for charities working in areas of conflict, which I think is extremely important as it raises awareness. I am excited to see what events take place this year. I am looking forward to representing my heritage during Culture Day next month at my school by wearing my country’s traditional clothes, which have embroidery that represents the millennial history and traditions of my nation.
Culture Day is truly a day widely enjoyed by students all over the country. There are countless videos on TikTok where students show off their cultural clothing and hold their flags with pride, which I think is beautiful to see.
To conclude, I believe that being aware of different cultures can really expand your view of the world, and you can learn to appreciate the people around you more.
