Cruise holiday luggage warning – ‘digging through bags’

On a port day, cruise passengers will usually return to the ship at the end of the day. One passenger wanted to know whether the cruise line would search their bags on their return.

They asked on Reddit: “I’m going on a cruise and was wondering when we get back on ship, do they search your bags?”

Another passenger replied: “All the cruises I’ve ever been on run all your bags, purses etc, you bring back onboard through the scanner like they use at airports.”

The majority of cruise ships will have airport style security to scan guests’ bags when they enter the boat.

Another guest agreed saying: “Yes they do check your bag. The bag will go through an X-ray and your body will go through a metal detector.”

Cruise lines need to keep their passengers and crew safe so will scan luggage for dangerous items.

However, passengers may also have other banned items confiscated if they try to bring them on the ship.

A guest said: “Many ports have sniffer dogs, some both leaving the ship and returning.

“No open beverages, no liquor bottles. They will take and hold it for you until the last night of the cruise you can pack it.

“No plants, rocks, seashells, live or dead animals.”

DON’T MISS

The majority of cruise ships have strict limits on the amount of alcohol passengers are allowed to bring onboard.

On Royal Caribbean cruise ships, passengers can bring up to two bottles of wine to have in their cabin.

However if guests want to purchase alcohol in their holiday destinations they can bring it on the ship.

It will be confiscated by security and returned to the guest at the end of the cruise holiday so they can pack it.

Candles are banned on the majority of cruise ships due to the risk of having open flames onboard.

However, not every port will have the same level of security and it may depend on the cruise line.

One passenger said: “I remember being surprised once when I saw armed port security using sniffer dogs and actually digging through people’s bags, as well as seeing the people in front of us in line get randomly pulled aside and patted down.

“Someone in our group trashed their vape when we all saw that. That was by port security before we even had to go through ship security and essentially do it all over again.

“Other ports didn’t have any of that, just basic ship security and sometimes ship security didn’t even seem to look at the screen while scanning our bags.”

In destinations where drug laws are very strict, countries may have tougher port security for cruise guests.

Passengers can consult their cruise line if they are unsure whether they will be able to bring an item back onboard.

Coffee makers, clothes irons and travel steamers are also usually banned onboard cruise ships.
