Cruise guests share ‘vital’ item to pack for your first cruise

Regardless of whether it’s your first or one-hundredth cruise, one thing you’ll definitely want to do is take lots of photographs to remember your days sailing the high seas and exploring ports around the world. But with most of us relying on our mobile phones as cameras these days, many people opt to keep their phones locked away safely on pool days, beach days and excursions.

When it comes to a cruise holiday, water is everywhere, and while you might be craving a dip in the tranquil blue waters on a balmy day, the last thing you want is for even a drop of water to compromise your phone’s safety.

That’s why many cruise guests admit to leaving their phones stored in their room on excursions or avoid taking them along for sandy beach days.

Sharing to Reddit, a former cruise holidaymaker said: “I have a newer phone and was too worried about something happening to it so I left it in a dry bag when we went to ports, but literally everyone else had their phones in waterproof pouches and I feel like my group missed out on some great photo opportunities in the pools and beaches.

“And we went snorkelling and saw so many cool creatures. It was my first time snorkelling too but I don’t have anything to look back on since none of us took a phone or camera.”

That’s why so many cruise guests on social media recommend packing a waterproof phone case or pouch to take along with you.

In her video of “things I wish I brought on my first cruise”, TikTok content creator and cruise lover @sheknowshership said: “Bring a waterproof case, preferably one that floats so you can capture amazing memories. Get videos of the clear water. This is vital to protecting your phone.”

Luckily, there are loads of affordable waterproof phone pouches and cases available to keep your phone safe from unexpected splashes – or even if you accidentally drop your phone into a puddle of water.

The key thing to remember with a waterproof phone case or pouch is that, unless you want to shell out a large sum of money, the chances are that it isn’t a way to submerge your phone in water. While these cases are waterproof, we would never recommend taking your phone for an underwater dip on purpose.

But, what they can do is protect your phone if you want to take pictures swimming in the sea or pool, or on a boat excursion. Just try to keep your phone above the water level.

Former cruisers also recommend investing in a sturdy option, as cheap cases and pouches can become susceptible to rips or cracks over time, which could mean suddenly flooding your tech.

Sharing to a Reddit forum, user Valiamo advised: “Get one of the waterproof cases on Amazon. Used mine snorkelling a couple of years ago, and everything stayed nice and dry.

Don’t cheap out on this, as a ruined phone could be the result. You also want to be sure that you can use the photo feature on your phone through the plastic, most will not allow you to use the touch screen.”

Similarly, Reddit user Stopher added: “The bags work pretty well. Just know they don’t last forever. The softer plastic ones are less likely to crack.

“They’re pretty cheap and they come in packs of two on Amazon. My iPhone is supposed to be waterproof but I still use the bag as a precaution.”
