Cruise guest explains reason they ‘hate the buffet’
The majority of cruise ships have a buffet restaurant where guests can choose to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.
While the buffet is often one of the most popular choices onboard, a guest has taken to Reddit to explain why they “hate it”.
Reddit user ‘rainyhawk’ said: “Hate the buffet. Too many people, food really inconsistent and too much chance of getting exposed to something from the serving utensils etc.
“We do breakfast there as we never get up in time for the main dining room but stick to cereal generally. I avoid it when possible.”
The ship’s buffet is usually one of the busiest restaurants as it’s normally included in every cruise holiday package.

Guests can try to avoid the worst of the queues by eating outside of peak times and having a late dinner or early breakfast.
While cruise ships usually have stringent sanitation procedures in place, guests may be concerned about picking up germs at the buffet.
This is because a huge number of passengers will be touching the utensils which could increase the chance of germs spreading.
However, for other passengers, the buffet was the best restaurant onboard. A passenger ‘RainahReddit’ said: “Main dining rooms are fun, but they’re also slow and more limited in choice.
“At the buffet I’m in and out, I can take a bit of everything. If something sucks, I just grab something else.”
Buffet restaurants are usually quicker as guests won’t have to wait to be served and can leave straight after eating.
A buffet can also be a great chance to try new foods. Cruise ship buffets usually offer a huge range of world cuisine.
However tempting as it might be, guests will need to ensure they don’t take any food away from the buffet.
Some destinations have strict rules about fresh food and cruise guests may be fined if they try to take it over the border.
