Cristiano Ronaldo proves Jamie Carragher wrong to aid Solskjaer’s Man Utd revival
Cristiano Ronaldo has already proved Jamie Carragher wrong after yet another sensational moment for Manchester United just a month after his high-profile arrival. The Red Devils needed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to land all three points in the Champions League over Villarreal.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already been through a lot this season with his praises being sung and some calling for his dismissal at United.
But one thing that cannot be levelled at him is the sheer excitement that comes around on matchday, and much of that is down to Ronaldo.
It has been a month since the Portugal international returned to Old Trafford and it has been jam-packed with action.
In five matches, he has already scored five times but the latest could be the most important.
His 95th-minute winner against Villarreal has got the Red Devils off the mark in the Champions League and has allowed fans to draw a sigh of relief.
Getting out of their Champions League group is pivotal after last season’s disappointment as Solskjaer looks to revitalise his side.
It is clear that Ronaldo is already having a huge impact on his new side, something Carragher insisted he would not do.
“There’s no doubt for me, he’ll be challenging Mo Salah, Harry Kane and [Romelu Lukaku] for the golden boot,” he said as Ronaldo signed.
“But there’s also a knock-on effect, what it does to the rest of the team.
“Ronaldo is an amazing individual, one of the greatest players of all time. But does he make Manchester United better as a team?
“Or is his just another special individual to add to what they already have? That’s what I feel he is.”
It might be early days but Ronaldo is already making Carragher eat his words and Solskjaer was keen to sing his praises after the victory over Villarreal.
“He has done that so many times,” the Old Trafford boss said.
“When you saw him against Ireland a [few] weeks ago [for Portugal] he missed a penalty early, didn’t touch the ball more or less, then scored two great headers in the last two minutes.
“That is just what he has done throughout his career, he is so strong mentally, he just stays in the game.”
