Cristiano Ronaldo ‘decides to stay at Man Utd’ as Casemiro arrival causes U-turn
Cristiano Ronaldo has ‘accepted’ that he will remain a Manchester United player this summer, according to reports. The Portuguese forward was previously pushing for an exit from Old Trafford, though the signing of former team-mate Casemiro appears to have caused a U-turn in his decision.
After a miserable homecoming last season, Ronaldo had told the Red Devils that he would like to be sold to a team competing in the Champions League on several occasions over the summer. His agent, Jorge Mendes, has held talks with Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid amongst other clubs – though no concrete offers have arrived.
Throughout, United insisted that the player was not for sale and that he remained part of Ten Hag’s plans – and it appears Ronaldo may have accepted defeat. According to Portuguese football expert Pedro Almeida, the 37-year-old has accepted that he will be a United player this season.
The club recently ended their drought of a top-quality central midfielder by acquiring the services of Casemiro from Real Madrid, and the Brazilian’s arrival is thought to be key in Ronaldo’s decision. The pair spent five years together at the Santiago Bernabeu and enjoyed plenty of success, winning the Champions League on four occasions and the La Liga once.

Ronaldo has cut a frustrated figure for United so far this season and it remains to be seen whether Casemiro can spark a change in his approach. The Red Devils take on Liverpool on Monday night in what is certain to be a feisty encounter, with both sides having plenty to play for so early on in the season.
Though United legend Wayne Rooney believes that Ronaldo should be dropped for the match due to match fitness concerns, saying: “If I was in Ten Hag’s position my main concern would be getting energy on the pitch, and United’s failure to recruit a number nine means they relied on Ronaldo against Brentford, even though he hadn’t trained a lot with the team. He looked like he needs time to get match fit. ten Hag needs energy from his side and that may mean dropping Ronaldo.”
