Coyotes waive Alex Galchenyuk 12 days after signing him in NHL free agency
Alex Galchenyuk was waived by the Coyotes just 12 days after signing a one-year deal with the team during free agency.
“The Arizona Coyotes have placed forward Alex Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers for purposes of terminating his contract,” the team announced Thursday on Twitter. “The Club will have no further comments at this time.”
Galchenyuk, 29, was set to start his third stint with the organization –– he played for the Coyotes in both the 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons –– before Arizona was reportedly confronted with an “off-ice situation,” according to ESPN, regarding the forward.
The NHLPA is reportedly reviewing the decision.
If Galchenyuk, and his one-year, two-way $775,000 contract, clear waivers at noon on Friday, he will be an unrestricted free agent once again.
As the third overall pick of Montreal in the 2012 NHL Draft by Montreal, Galchenyuk was poised to be the next key piece in the franchise’s offense for the foreseeable future.
Things didn’t go as planned.
After six seasons in Montreal, most of which underperforming, Galchenyuk was dealt to Arizona in 2018 and has been bounced between five teams since.
He has skated for seven total teams since his draft year.
Galchenyuk spent the majority of last season in the AHL with the Colorado Eagles, posting 16 goals and 26 assists in 42 games.
While called up by the Avalanche for 11 NHL contests this year, Galchenyuk failed to garner a single point.
Galchenyuk has previously been linked to off-ice issues.
He was involved in a domestic violence dispute in 2016 and, in 2017, former Montreal head coach Mario Tremblay said Galchenyuk had received treatment in the NHL’s drug and alcohol program.
This claim was never confirmed by Galchenyuk or the Candadiens.
The Coyotes finished 27th out of 32 teams during the 2022-23 campaign and will remain at Arizona State University’s Mullet Arena this season as their Tempe project was rejected in May.
