Covid sparks school confusion for parents
Families face a frustrating wait about whether they’ll be able to send their kids back to school in one state as Covid cases soar.
South Australian families won’t know whether they can send their kids back to school just a week before they’re due to return to classrooms.
The state’s Education Minister John Gardner said there was still not enough information on the new Omicron variant of Covid to decide whether schools would adopt remote learning or other restrictions.
“We will have a much stronger understanding in a week or two,” Mr Gardner told reporters.
He said he wasn’t ruling anything out.
“Our preference is certainly for the start of the school year, for the whole of the school year to be in classrooms,” he said.
The Premier Steven Marshall said thew government was keeping all options on the table but promised to deliver a decision by the end of the month.
“It is something we’re concerned about but we’re not in a position yet to let parents know how that’s going to occur,” Mr Marshall said.
However Opposition leader Peter Malinauskas told ABC Radio Adelaide on Tuesday that “everything is going wrong”.
“Everything is going wrong. The one (thing) that I think every parent around the state is worried about … is what is happening to schools?” he said.
The Labor leader is currently in isolation after he contracted Covid.
The state recorded a massive 2,552 cases on Monday, while 94 people are in hospital with Covid.
