COVID Effects Education- Fatima Pervez- Gumley House Convent School

QS Learning is a tuition centre that has been supporting the local community for the past 10 years to aid students in their SATs, 11+ exams, GCSEs and A-Levels as well as generously providing adult ESOL classes and a homework club, free off charge. Despite being one of the oldest tuition centres in the area and providing guaranteed results, being a small business, it struggled to stay open whilst the world was engulfed in a pandemic.

The tuition centre suffered greatly during COVID-19 and was forced to close for a significant period of time. However the tuition centre took advantage of this as to launch a new virtual classroom and shifted its lessons online, offering free extra lessons to all of its students to make up for the school hours that were lost.
Mariya Khanam, centre manager, tells me that “Although the pandemic was a major setback, we have adapted to the situation and created our own personalised virtual classroom to continue teaching the children and to keep the business going”. She goes on to say that “Initially we had thought that we would lose a lot of customers and the business would go down but by creating the virtual classroom we are now able to effectively interact and teach other people all across the UK, not just in the local area”.

Many businesses were badly affected by COVID-19 and only some, like QS Learning managed to get through these hard times by finding an advantage of having to stay at home.
