Couples who can’t commit and ‘Game of Thrones’ producers turn to a teenage heavy metal band: What’s streaming on Crave, Netflix and more this week

With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate, choosing what to watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.

MONDAY

The Invisible Pilot

HBO’s latest offering is the story of a charming pilot, husband and father who unexpectedly jumped off a bridge in 1977. Gary Betzner seemed to have a happy home life but, as in most documentaries, things were not as they initially appeared. The three-part series explores Betzner’s mysterious backstory, which involves hypnosis, a secret identity and a dangerous double life. All the makings of a must watch.

TUESDAY

Ronny Chieng: Speakeasy

Comedian and “Daily Show” correspondent Ronny Chieng is back with his second Netflix comedy special. This time around, Chieng takes on the pandemic and cancel culture with material that also draws on his own personal experiences performing on tour. Known for fusing smart comedy with rage and physicality, Chieng might just make you laugh. Let’s just hope he doesn’t make any Jada Pinkett Smith jokes.

Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off

The most famous skateboarder in the world is chronicled in this new HBO documentary. The life of Hawk, considered the pioneer of vertical skating, is examined by talking to other prominent figures in the sport about his lasting legacy. These famous boarders include Stacy Peralta, Rodney Mullen and Mike McGill.

WEDNESDAY

Green Mothers’ Club

This South Korean drama focuses on five mothers who meet at their children’s elementary school. It isn’t long before the competitive nature of the school teaches them to keep their friends close and their enemies closer as more and more secrets are unravelled.

The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On

If you are craving something to fill the hole left by “Love Is Blind,” this new series could be the answer. While “The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On” is also hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, its concept is very different from its predecessor. The series features six couples, all of whom appear to be headed toward marriage. The premise is that only one partner is ready to take the ultimate step while the other has cold feet. In eight weeks, they must choose to commit to marriage or end things. The twist? While they are deciding, they each get to choose another potential partner from one of the other couples to get a glimpse of what a different future might look like. Here’s hoping Shake makes a cameo. Pick of the week.

All the Old Knives

This thriller is based on the novel by Olen Steinhauer. It revolves around the CIA discovering that one of its own agents leaked information that cost more than 100 people their lives. That’s when Henry Pelham (played by Chris Pine) is assigned to find the rat.

Return to Space

This doc follows Elon Musk and a team of SpaceX engineers as they embark on a mission to return NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. The story of Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley (who boarded the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft in May 2020) is directed by Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin.

Serving the Hamptons

“Serving the Hamptons” feels like a new age “Vanderpump Rules.” It focuses on the staff at 75 Main, a hot restaurant with an even hotter staff. The series follows the staff as they work, play and live together. The owner apparently puts them up rent-free as long as they follow the rules of not hooking up, not throwing parties and not drinking on the job. This feels more like an MTV show than Discovery Plus and that’s exactly why I want to watch it.

Tokyo Vice

Loosely inspired by journalist Jake Adelstein’s first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, this HBO Max original series dives into the underbelly of Tokyo’s crime scene. Ansel Elgort plays Adelstein in the series.

This sexy Spanish thriller is set at a fictional secondary school and revolves around the relationship between three working-class teenage students who are enrolled through a scholarship program, and how different they are from their wealthy classmates. The fifth season will start with the aftermath of a major death and the introduction of some new students.

Metal Lords

This teen music drama is about two kids who want to start a heavy metal band in high school. When they are unable to find a bass player, they settle for a really good cello player instead. The series stars relative newcomers in Jaeden Martell and Adrian Greensmith, but the brains behind the project are David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the masterminds of “Game of Thrones.” This is their first project as part of a new deal they inked with Netflix. I am willing to bet they want to impress their new employer with their first title.
