Cornes questions Silvagni’s ‘nerve’ over sledge

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has taken Carlton’s Jack Silvagni to task over his sledge towards Kangaroos youngster Jason Horne-Francis, reminding him of the Blues’ recent struggles.

Silvagni and Horne-Francis were involved in a brief scuffle during the third quarter of Carlton’s win over North Melbourne, when the Blues forward appeared to utter the words “you’re s–t” towards last year’s No.1 pick.

Horne-Francis confirmed the sledge days after the match, saying “(Silvagni) just said that we weren’t very good and I wasn’t very good”.

Cornes wondered if Silvagni had a leg to stand on, despite the Blues currently sitting sixth on the AFL ladder with a 5-2 record after seven rounds.

“I’m thinking where is the nerve of Jack? Has Jack forgotten what team he’s been playing at for the last seven years?” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“I just thought I’d look up Jack Silvagni’s stats. He’s played 84 games across seven seasons, how many finals?

“None, he hasn’t played a final, and he’s got the nerve to tell Jason Horne-Francis that he’s playing in a bad team.

“Jack, you might be in the top eight right now, but you’ve quickly forgotten what team you’ve been playing at for the last seven years.

“Goodness me, how about the nerve. I like Jack Silvagni, I understand you get caught up in the heat of the moment, but of all the insults you could level at a youngster, a Carlton player telling a North Melbourne player that they’re playing for a poor team!”

Silvagni, the son of Carlton champion Stephen, made his debut for the Blues in 2016 after being drafted with the 53rd pick of the 2015 draft.

Since his arrival, the Blues have failed to win over eight games in each of his first six seasons in the AFL.

Silvagni and the Blues will look to continue their fast start to 2022 when they host the Adelaide Crows at Marvel Stadium in round eight.
