cook: Apple CEO Tim Cook on why he is worried about people using too much technology – Times of India

Smartphones are ubiquitous in a large section of society and have invaded people’s lives like nothing before. Smartphone ‘addiction’ is a genuine concern and researchers have also reported its impact on mental health. Apple CEO Tim Cook has now weighed in on mental health, the role of technology and more.
According to a report by 9to5Mac, Cook met with developers of Shine, a mental health app was which was awarded one of the best on App Store. Cook said that mental health is a “crisis” and one “that has been stigmatised too much.”
The Apple CEO was candid enough to admit that he suffered from pandemic lows. “You know, I don’t have an S on my chest and a cape on my back. I suffer from the pandemic lows as much as everybody else does. I know that I’m privileged in so many ways, but none of us are privileged to the point that mental health is not a key factor in life,” Cook said as per the report.
Cook said that he is worried about people using technology too much. “I’ve often worried about the endless scrolling, the surrounding yourself with negativity and so forth,” before adding that he wants people to do things with their devices for things they enjoy but “not endless, mindless scrolling.” He also said that technology should serve humanity and not the other way around.
Last year, Cook in an interview said that he had a simple rule to check if people are using their phones too much. “My simple rule is, if you’re looking at your device more than you’re looking in somebody’s eyes, you’re doing the wrong thing — just very simple,” said the Apple CEO.
