Conor McGregor has sent a heartfelt farewell message to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following his Manchester United exit.

United confirmed Solskjaer’s departure on Sunday morning less than 24 hours after a dismal 4-1 defeat to Watford.

It followed comprehensive defeats to arch-rivals Liverpool and Manchester City prior to the international break with United taking just four points from a possible 21 during a dreadful run of form.

Marcus Rashford led the tributes to the club legend following Sunday’s decision with David de Gea, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay among those bidding farewell to the manager on social media.

Former UFC champion McGregor, a boyhood United fan, sent his own message, writing on Twitter: ‘I want to give a major shout out, and a huge thank you to the living legend that is Ole Gunnar Solskjær!

‘Ole you are forever, Sir! Icon! Inspiration! Hero! Legend! Thank you Ole.’

Solskjaer gave a farewell interview to MUTV on Sunday evening.

‘It’s been a ball. Let’s keep supporting this team, you’ve got to stick with them,’ he said.

‘They [the fans] have been amazing with me since one of my first kicks of the ball, I scored with one of the first ones, until now.

‘And I’m sure we’ll meet again because if there’s anywhere I’m going to watch football games, that’s at Old Trafford.’
