Conor Benn drops hint over agreement for Manny Pacquiao fight this summer
Conor Benn has dropped a major hint over a showdown with ring legend Manny Pacquiao this summer.
The welterweight star has not fought since testing positive for banned substance comifene in the lead-up to his grudge match against Chris Eubank Jr last October.
While Benn is still being investigated by UK doping authority UKAD and the British Boxing Board of Control, he is now preparing for his return to the ring.
While he is not currently licenced to fight in the UK, his promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed Benn will be involved in a ‘massive fight’ abroad in the coming months with Pacquiao the current front runner for that fight.
In his latest social media post on Wednesday, Benn shared footage of himself working in the gym, tagging Pacquiao in the post along with a signed contract emoji, fuelling speculation a deal could be done.
Benn also shared a snippet of training footage that showed one of Pacquiao’s old fights on in the background.
The Filipino legend retired from boxing in the summer of 2021 following a one-sided defeat to Yordenis Ugas, failing in a bid to become the new president of his country the following year.
The eight-weight world champion was involved in a lucrative exhibition bout against South Korean martial artist DK Yoo last year but has remained open to a full return to the sport, with his advisor Sean Gibbons confirming last week the 44-year-old has returned to full training.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk this week, Benn’s promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed interest in making the fight happen.
‘We believe he [Benn] is innocent, if people don’t want to believe that they are entitled to their opinion,’ Hearn said.
‘But his career is about to resume. And he wants to resume with a massive fight, he has no interest in a warm-up fight.
‘He wants Manny Pacquiao, he wants Chris Eubank Jr, he wants Errol Spence Jr, he wants all of them. The eyes of the world are going to be on Conor, unfortunately for reasons we would rather not. But we are where we are.’
