Sarma who was in Manipur on Monday said, “Congress has given a walkover and will be restricted to a single digit. Congress will be restricted to five seats.”
BJP is contesting 60 seats, Congress is contesting 54 seats and left the rest of the seats for allies. National People’s Party (NPP) is contesting 42 seats and JD(U) is contesting 38 seats. Naga People’s Front (NPF) is contesting 10 seats.
Several smaller parties have sprung up triggering speculation that there might be a split of votes.
In 2017 Congress went out of power in Manipur after 15 years of rule. In 2017 assembly polls Congress emerged as the single largest party with 28 MLAs, Manipur assembly is 60-member assembly. Later around eight Congress MLAs left the party. BJP won 21 seats and it contested all the 60 seats.
BJP got support from National People’s Party (NPP) and Naga People’s Front NPF which won four seats each. One MLA each from Trinamool congress, Lok Jan Shakti party and lone independent member supported the government.
The two-phase elections to the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly will be held on February 28 and March 5.
