Concerning Sheehan injury update as Bolton count cost of Stockport loss

Josh Sheehan’s knee is currently ‘unstable’ according to Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt as the League One side saw what life is like without MJ Williams in the engine room as they were dumped out of the FA Cup by Stockport County.

Wanderers took the lead early on when Elias Kachunga put them ahead early on, and their lead was doubled when Ash Palmer put through his own net.

Paddy Madden halved the deficit from the penalty spot, before Amadou Bakayoko restored Bolton’s two-goal advantage, though Scott Quigley netted before the break.

Palmer scored at the right end before full-time to take the tie into extra time, before Quigley and Ollie Crankshaw struck to dump a dismal Wanderers out of the competition in a 5-3 loss at Edgeley Park.

In first half stoppage time, midfielder Sheehan came off to be replaced by Will Aimson.

And speaking after the loss, Evatt said that Sheehan came off after his knee felt ‘unstable’, which the Wanderers chief admitted ‘doesn’t necessarily sound good’.

Holding midfielder Williams missed the encounter owing to an illness, and Evatt believes there was a brutal illustration of what life without the former Liverpool youth product is like for Bolton.

He said: “At the minute his (Sheehan’s) knee feels unstable. We have tested it as best as we can and can’t put our finger on anything in particular but the fact that it feels unstable doesn’t necessarily sound good.

“We have had illnesses and injuries in the camp but they are just excuses. We just need to be better, work harder and fight more. Today we didn’t do that.

“I think we have all, including myself, asked the question what would it be like when MJ Williams isn’t available, well tonight, you have got the answer.

“The two-goal lead, it wasn’t like our play deserved it. Their mistakes gave us the goals.

“From minute one to 120 we were not ourselves.

“We got embroiled in a cup tie. Made it transitional and end-to-end and we didn’t do the basics at all, which means you’ll get beat.”
