Colts’ Jim Irsay asks bizarre Will Levis question ahead of NFL Draft second round
Colts fans better hope Jim Irsay is just trolling.
Because if not, he isn’t making a shred of sense.
The colorful Colts owner perplexed everybody — which he’s made a habit of doing — with a question he posed on Twitter Friday afternoon.
The Colts entered the 2023 NFL Draft needing a quarterback, and seemingly got their guy in Anthony Richardson with the fourth-overall pick Thursday evening.
Or so most thought, until Irsay’s bizarre inquiry.
“Colts Fans…,” Irsay began his post. “would you take Will Levis at #2 if you’re on the board for Colts in 4 hours from now??… and go Montana – Young for Franchise??”
It’s hard to know where even to begin in breaking down that Tweet.
First of all, the Colts do not own the No. 2 pick in the second round, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday night.
They have the No. 4 pick (35th overall) in the second round, just like they did in the first round.
Unless Irsay is implying that the Colts could trade up in the second round.
Second, it makes little-to-no sense for the Colts to draft another quarterback in the second round after just drafting one in the first round.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard and new head coach Shane Steichen spoke glowingly of Richardson after Indianapolis drafted him, tabbing the former Florida Gators star as their signal-caller of the future.
Richardson was one of the biggest wildcard prospects after starting just 13 total games in college with volatile production and elite athletic testing results.
On the other hand, Levis surprisingly slid out of the first round after many had predicted he would be a top-five or top-10 pick.
“We like [Richardson’s] talent,” Ballard told reporters Friday night. “We like what he can be. … What I can tell you is we drafted him for what we think he can really be in the future.”
But what kind of message does it send to Richardson that the team’s owner is already flirting with other quarterbacks?
Likely not a good one.
And third, the Joe Montana-Steve Young comparison doesn’t really hold water.
While there was a bit of an awkward overlap between the two Hall of Famers on the 49ers, Montana was entering his ninth season with the team in 1987 when San Francisco brought in Young as a potential successor.
That’s a far cry from being drafted the same year, one round apart.
It wasn’t the only strange tweet Irsay sent out ahead of the second round.
“DAY TWO begins 7pm EDT,” he posted a few hours earlier. “We’ll pick early in Rd. 2. OR WILL WE?”
The Colts almost certainly won’t actually draft Levis or any quarterback in the second round.
But that won’t stop Irsay and his senseless Tweets.
