Coach fires up over ‘personal attacks’ on skipper

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has taken aim at critics of James Tedesco after the club’s skipper produced a vintage performance on Saturday afternoon.

The fullback was in Byron Bay for a post-Origin getaway last weekend and missed the match against the Storm.

Speaking after his side’s 36-18 win over the Titans, Robinson described the criticism of his captain as “disappointing” considering the club was behind the idea for a break.

“It’s unfortunate, it’s happened a couple of times this year, it’s been hanging around for quite a while the discussions around him,” he said.

“It’s easy to say from my point of view but it’s really disappointing, the commentary around that … why was there a discussion this week?

“It was my call, and that was it and he came back and played the way he plays, he was a bit fresher and the biggest difference in the game today.”

Robinson went on to describe the attacks on Tedesco as personal.

“I feel like we can talk about selections and all that but it’s disappointing when someone gets personally attacked for what they’re doing right by the club, but anyway that’s our game I guess,” he said.

Tedesco scored a try for the Roosters, finished with 246 run metres and had two try assists as well as two line break assists.

After a tough campaign with the Blues, and coming off a successful Rugby League World Cup campaign last year, Tedesco’s schedule has been non-stop ever since the 2022 NRL season ended.
