Club director suddenly quits under-fire Carlton

Carlton Football Club director Craig Mathieson has resigned as the club faces increasing pressure to perform.

Having served on the club’s board since 2012, Mathieson oversaw the club’s finance and audit remits. He is also the nephew of club powerbroker Bruce Mathieson.

Mathieson quit over the weekend following the Blues’ 26-point loss to the Swans on Friday night.

“We accept Craig’s decision to resign from his role as a club director and thank him for all he has contributed to the Blues across 11 years of service,” club president Luke Sayers said in a statement.

An anonymous club insider told The Age, Mathieson had become increasingly frustrated with the Blues’ poor run of form this season.

With the the Blues positioned 13th on the ladder with just four wins, Mathieson had reportedly been calling for change in the club’s football department, including a probe into senior coach Michael Voss’ performance.

The Blues will now call on its Independent Nominations Committee to start the process of appointing Mathieson’s replacement.

Under the Blues’ constitution, directors cannot serve longer than 12 years or four consecutive three-year stints.

“Craig’s position as a director would have become vacant at the end of 2024 due to him reaching his maximum term under the constitution,” Sayers said on Monday.

“His decision to resign means that the club will now take counsel from its independent nominations committee, to commence a thorough process for a director replacement, based on the needs analysis of board requirements and relevant skill sets.

“I also would like to take this time to reinforce what I stated last week. We will judge our 2023 season at the end of the year, in its totality. Football clubs are defined by their moments of adversity and I can guarantee we will handle ours with a level-headed professionalism that Carlton people should expect.”

Sayers’ term on the board and as president is also timed to finish after the 2024 season. According to the The Age, Sayers is expected to leave for a long-planned, extended European holiday shortly.

Similarly, Voss is contracted until the end of 2024.
