Classic Ford Capri in ‘time warp condition’ sold at auction for a fortune
A CLASSIC Ford Capri in ‘time warp condition’ has been sold at auction for an eye-watering amount.
A Ford Capri 280 Brooklands model that was discovered in a garage with only 2,960 miles on the clock, has been auctioned off for £39,938.
The Capri is finished in desirable Brooklands Green paintwork with a ‘Raven’ leather interior.
Larger 15-inch alloys had been fitted to the car, along with a set of optional RS centre caps.
Aside from the go-faster stripes, badging and contrasting red piping on the seats, the 280 was essentially a cosmetically enhanced Capri 2.8i Special, right down to the 2.8-litre fuel-injected engine producing 160bhp.
This particular 280 was supplied and registered new in 1987 by Soans of Leamington Spa – and was bought by its vendor in 2021 after being sourced from an extensive collection of Ford Capris, Irish news reports.
This Ford, which Historic Car Auctions sold at its Christmas sale in 2022, is described as having an interior that is in “time warp condition.”
However, it will require some recommissioning by its new owner before it hits the road again for the first time in over 30 years.
Capri 280 Club Chairman, Mick Ward, told Classic Car Weekly: “The biggest problem with this car is that it opens the conundrum of what do you do with it? If you drive it, it loses its value, which makes it special, but if you don’t, it’s just going to sit and be unappreciated. It’s a true dilemma.”
To mark the end of manufacturing, Ford produced 1038 Capri 280s, but despite the popularity of Ford’s “European Mustang,” dealers had trouble selling them.
When the Ford Capri came out in 1980, its price was £11,999 – which is £31,700 in today’s money.
This comes after a classic Mini tucked away in a dusty garage for 33 years has been sold for an eye-watering amount at auction.
Plus, a rare Mini that was abandoned in a shed for decades has sold for more than £52,000 at auction.
