Class 6 boy’s project ‘Smart Copra Dryer’ selected for IRIS National Fair – Times of India

Mangaluru: A class VI student of a private residential school in the city has won the first prize for his project, ‘smart copra dryer’, at the CBSE National Science Model Exhibition held at Gurugram, Haryana, recently. With this achievement, he has qualified to participate in the IRIS National Fair, which recognizes and rewards outstanding projects. It also provides a platform for winning students to represent India at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, held annually in the US.
Shastha Naik V, a student of Shakthi Residential School, Shakthinagar, developed a smart copra dryer. According to Naik, the smart copra dryer is the product of the incubation of a vision, and it’s nurturing into a living, inspiring reality. “The vision was to repurpose an old method of drying copra into a new technique,’’ he said, adding that this copra dryer is equipped with an automatic system that doesn’t require much human intervention.
This smart system senses the rain, and automatically provides a protective covering over dried copra and other agricultural products, when needed. This system also provides optimum conditions for drying coconuts, by detecting the moisture in the atmosphere, and thereby automatically providing a heating system that works on the basic principle of the heating effect of current. This maintains a fairly warm system, optimal for drying coconuts.
He stated that a threat detector in this integrated system detects movement caused by wildlife and other animals. When triggered by any movement, this system alerts the farmers with high-pitched sounds and also scares away the animal. Moreover, this system can also be used for drying clothes and other items. The system is powered by solar energy, making it environmentally friendly. The excess energy stored, can be used for domestic purposes. This arrangement also has an integrated rainwater harvesting system. The rainwater is collected in the underground storage tank. This water is available for use, all throughout the year.
The smart copra dryer is a cost-effective, integrated system. As there is a reduction in manpower, efficiency rises. It requires low maintenance. It improves the quality and quantity of groundwater. The dryer keeps products free from environmental factors like dust, dirt, and animal droppings. “This is indeed a novel solution to many of the problems faced during copra drying,” explained Naik. The selection for the IRIS National Fair will begin in September 2023.
