Chris Sutton demands apology as VAR robs Brighton at Tottenham

Chris Sutton has called on Howard Webb to issue Brighton another apology following a controversial game against Tottenham. The pundit believes the Seagulls were on the wrong end of three bad decisions from VAR on Saturday.

Webb, the chief referring officer for the PGMOL, apologised to Brighton earlier in the season after a Pervis Estupinan goal was wrongly disallowed for offside during their 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace in February. And Sutton now believes Webb will be making contact with the Seagulls again.

Tottenham ran out 2-1 winners in north London after a hugely contentious match. Brighton had goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Alexis Mac Allister ruled out after VAR adjudged both players to have handled the ball.

The BT Sport studio felt both decisions were incorrect. Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham interim head coach Cristian Stellini were sent off after both benches clashed after Mac Allister’s goal was chalked off.

Brighton then felt they should have been given a penalty when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg appeared to trip Mitoma. Referee Stuart Attwell did not point to the spot and VAR did not recommend a pitchside review.

Sutton labelled the decisions “disgraceful” during the second half with the score at 1-1. And he predicted Spurs would grab a late winner, albeit undeserved.

The former Chelsea striker fumed: “The dominant team, as they have been all afternoon. I actually feel angry with what’s happened. I’m not a Brighton fan.

“I think it’s disgraceful, I really, really do. Was it not earlier in the season Howard Webb apologised to Brighton for VAR making an error? I think I covered that game as well.

“He’ll be making another apology to De Zerbi. They have been miles ahead of Tottenham, I don’t know what is going on there in terms of their brand of football.

“I don’t think even the most ardent Spurs fans would think that this team based on performances have been good enough to qualify for the Champions League this season. If you’re Brighton, you are furious.

“They have had three huge decisions go against them and it will just be typical if Harry Kane took a dive in the box towards the end of the game and Spurs get awarded a penalty.”

Shortly after, Spurs did score a winner through Kane. Sutton had sympathy for the visitors, commenting: “Here are Spurs, Harry Kane, 2-1! I think it takes a slight deflection. I’m not getting excited about this, I think Brighton have been so harshly treated this afternoon.

“He is so accurate in these positions, it’s a devastating finish but it’s been a devastating afternoon for Brighton. They haven’t deserved this.”
