Chris Packham has raised over £90,000 on a crowdfunding site for his legal battle against a publisher he’s accused of ‘hate terrorism’.

The presenter, best known for fronting wildlife shows, has accused Fieldsports Channel of heading up a campaign of online abuse against him.

Chris, 61, claims the hunting-related publisher has created ‘hateful’ articles about him, including one that suggested he’d faked death threats.

The TV star said he now fears for the safety of himself and his family and insists laws around online abuse aren’t strong enough.

Launching the campaign in an online video, the Guardian reports Chris said: ‘I sometimes leave or return to my home wondering if someone will be there waiting – someone who is so excited by these accusations that they feel motivated to extreme violence.’

Noting that his civil case has so far lasted two years and been costly, Chris added: ‘It’s not something most people can afford or stomach. I’m two years into cases which have cost thousands of pounds and many sleepless nights.

‘People should simply not be able to get away with hate terrorism and they must be held to account if there is any hope that we might live in a respectful, decent society.’

Police previously investigated the claim that Chris faked death threats and concluded it was false.

Chris’ stepdaughter, Megan McCubbin, has also been publicly pushing the crowdfunder, previously taking to Twitter to brand Fieldsports Channel ‘despicable’.

Addressing Chris’ legal case, Charlie Jacoby, a Fieldsports Channel presenter, told the Guardian in part: ‘We don’t understand why Chris didn’t settle this with a phone call. It’s as if he and his solicitor Leigh Day are only interested in using the courts to extract cash – in this case from a small media company that can’t afford legal help.’

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Chris’ reps and Fieldsports Channel for comment.
