Chris Martin proves he’s a true Barbie Girl as he delights fans with Aqua cover
A Coldplay and Barbie crossover wasn’t on our 2023 bingo card.
But, when a fan has a request, who is Chris Martin to deny them?
The band was performing in Amsterdam on Sunday (July 16) when two lucky concertgoers were brought on stage to sit next to the frontman at the mic.
They brought with them a sign reading, ‘Play Barbie Girl’ and, despite being baffled, Chris decided to give the people what they wanted.
‘Who comes to a Colplay show and asks for Barbie Girl?’, a bemused Chris began. ‘You do, oky.’
The fans then burst into giggles as Chris attempted the tune on the piano.
‘I haven’t heard this for, like, 30 years, but I’ll try,’ the singer promised.
He proceeded to sing 1997 Aqua hit, much to the enjoyment of the thousands-strong crowd.
Honestly, hearing Chris Martin singing, ‘Life in plastic, it’s fantastic,’ is very surreal.
The most hilarious part, however, came as the stadium sang along, loving every second.
True to his word, though, Chris got a bit stuck with some of the lyrics, admitting his memory was ‘sketchy’.
He then started to mumble the words and joked: ‘We’ve gotta help the Barbie movie, right?’
‘Barbie Girl, done, complete!’, Chris, 46, concluded triumphantly, high-fiving the fans.
Reacting to the moment on Twitter, fans were living for the bizarre cover.
‘LOL it’s humanly impossible not to be a fan of these guys’, one fan tweeted.
‘Chris Martin is amazing omg’, wrote another.
Another wrote: ‘Chris singing Barbie girl wasn’t something I couldve ever imagined happening and yet it’s the greatest thing I’ve experienced in my life’.
We’re sure Chris’s emotional rendition of the pop track will provide Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film with all the promo ahead of its release on Friday…
