Mason Mount hopes to feature in Chelsea’s Champions League last-16 tie against Lille after making an early return to training following an injury lay-off.

The playmaker was subbed off in the Club World Cup final in Dubai earlier this month after hurting his ankle in the 2-1 victory against Brazilian side Palmeiras.

Thomas Tuchel sounded pessimistic about Mount’s chances for returning against the Ligue 1 champions but he was spotted in training last night, giving hope that he could feature at Stamford Bridge.

Though Mount is unlikely to start, he could take a place on the bench in what is a significant boost for the Blues.

Cesar Azpilicueta should be available again after a groin injury but Reece James and Ben Chilwell remain sidelined.

Chelsea could have faced much tougher opponents on paper having finished second in their group but Tuchel is not taking the French champions lightly.

Despite having the Carabao Cup final to contend with on Sunday, the German says he will not rest players.

‘It is the moment to be super focused and not worry about the big picture because that would make us look at a lot of different pictures and environments,’ said Tuchel.

‘In terms of team management, we don’t think ahead. We bring the best group for the game and then we will take care of Sunday’s match.’
