Chelsea have rejected Arsenal’s opening offer for Kai Havertz but expect the Gunners to return with an improved bid.

The Germany international has emerged as a surprise target for Premier League runners-up Arsenal as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options this summer.

Arteta wants to strengthen his squad at the Emirates Stadium as he eyes another title challenge and prepares for Arsenal’s return to the Champions League.

Arsenal have made signing a new midfielder their priority during this window and remain optimistic of landing West Ham captain Declan Rice, despite seeing an opening offer rejected by the Hammers.

But the Gunners are also working on other deals and, according to the Daily Telegraph, have tabled their first bid for Havertz, which has been turned down by Chelsea.

Havertz has endured a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge, scoring the winner in a Champions League final but only contributing 32 goals overall.

The 24-year-old is open to leaving Chelsea this summer and may force the club’s hand as he has no intention of signing a contract extension.

The Blues were hoping to secure Havertz to a new deal and incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino was said to view the German as a key member of his squad.

But Havertz looks set to leave Chelsea and is now also attracting interest from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, according to Sky Germany.
