Chelsea icon tells Graham Potter to ‘be more arrogant like Jose Mourinho’

Graham Potter should be ‘a little bit more arrogant’ as it will make his Chelsea players more confident, claims Glen Johnson.

Chelsea are enduring a terrible run of form, winning just two of their last 14 games, with the Blues languishing down in 10th place in the Premier League table, 10 points off the top four.

They have been knocked out of both domestic cups and on Wednesday night lost the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund.

Potter retains the backing of the club’s board for now, but the manager is under considerable pressure and has received criticism for not showing enough anger and emotion when results don’t go his way.

The 47-year-old says that this is just the way he prefers to conduct himself in public, but Johnson suggests that it would be a good idea for him to change his approach ever so slightly.

Asked if Potter needed to be a bit more arrogant like former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, the former defender told Lord Ping: ‘Obviously he is a very calm and calculated guy, so maybe that is not in his DNA.

‘I suppose a little bit of arrogance is right in the sense that, if he is walking around with confidence it is only going to rub off onto the players.

‘I don’t know if he has that sort of characteristic about him to be honest with you. There are loads of managers that are still great, but deliver their messages in a different way.

‘Graham Potter is the sort of guy who seems to come across in a softer manner, obviously a gentleman, but sometimes every now and then he may have to light off a firework.’

Johnson, who won the Premier League at Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2005, says that the manager’s ‘arrogance’ helped the side be as successful as they were.

‘It was all super exciting because we were pretty much signing the best players in the world. All the players want to play with the best players, so we all knew that if we played to 8/10 that no one could beat us,’ he added.

‘It was just that confidence that we knew when the away team would put up our team sheet in their dressing room, they would think, “how are we going to beat that?”

‘So it gives you confidence, but then Mourinho would just give you even more confidence. We were just a good, defensive side in terms of being hard to break down but it didn’t feel like we could lose.’
