Chelsea have major Ben Chilwell injury fear as star’s season could be over

Chelsea are worried that Ben Chilwell could be sidelined for the rest of the season after picking up a knee injury in Tuesday’s win over Juventus, according to reports. The England defender was left unable to continue during the closing stages of the match and needed to be helped down the tunnel by Chelsea’s medical staff.

Chilwell appeared to jar his leg with just 19 minutes remaining at Stamford Bridge and was swiftly replaced by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Chelsea went on to register a convincing 4-0 win over Juventus, with Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Timo Werner among the goals.

However, the Blues are said to be fearing the worst for Chilwell, who has made 10 appearances in all competitions this season.

They believe that he may have ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and could be poised to miss the rest of the campaign, according to The Sun.

It is claimed that Chilwell has already started initial treatment by undergoing scans in order to assess the scale of the problem.

Chelsea’s team of physios are waiting for the full results to come through before delivering their verdict on what the injury is and how long Chilwell will be sidelined for.

If his anterior cruciate ligament is damaged, the 24-year-old could potentially be on the treatment table for up to nine months, depending on the severity of the issue.

The Blues were also forced to withdraw N’Golo Kante from the action on Tuesday evening after just 37 minutes in another unwelcome blow for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The German boss insisted after the final whistle that he is hoping for the best with regards to both players, who could be set to miss Sunday’s match against Manchester United.

DON’T MISS

“It worries me because he [Chilwell] was in such a fantastic moment, like Reece [James] on the other side,” said Tuchel.

“They were in the best shape they could possibly be, so strong and so full of confidence and with such a lot of quality.

“Chilly has a sharp pain in the knee and he was in a lot of pain. Now he feels a bit better so we will have an examination tomorrow to be more precise.

“We hope for the best and it’s not too bad news. It’s the same with N’Golo. He twisted his knee a little bit but hopefully it’s not too bad.

“These were the only two sad things because N’Golo was again fantastic until the moment when he went off and Chilly is in a fantastic moment and is also important. Let’s hope for the best.”

Tuchel could be fored to rely on Marcos Alonso to replace Chilwell at left-back on a long-term basis if the former Leicester City man is ruled out for a considerable length of time.

Chelsea are already through to the knockout stages of the Champions League as they look to successfully defend the European title they won last season, while a remarkable Premier League triumph also looks to be on the cards this time around.

The Blues are currently leading the way at the top of the order on 29 points after winning nine of their 12 matches in the competition.
