Chelsea and Manchester United could make a move for Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries in January, according to reports.

Dumfries is currently on international duty at the World Cup, where he has played every minute of the Netherlands’ campaign in Qatar so far.

The right-back first burst onto the scene at last year’s Euros where he scored two goals in the group stages and subsequently earned a £12million move to Inter.

His reputation has only grown in Serie A, and Dumfries was subsequently linked with a big money switch to the Premier League over the summer, with Chelsea and United interested in acquiring his services.

The 26-year-old stayed in Milan in the end, but Italian outlet Calciomercato now claim that both the Blues and the Red Devils will attempt to lure him to Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford respectively when the transfer window reopens.

However, any deal for Dumfries sides will not come cheap with Inter valuing the defender, whose contract expires in 2025, at around €50m (£43m).

Chelsea are keen to sign another right-back as cover for Reece James, who, while a huge talent, has struggled massively with injuries over the past few seasons.

Dumfries is notable for his physical attributes and is more commonly deployed as a right-wing-back which should appeal to Graham Potter.

United manager Erik ten Hag meanwhile has made no secret that he wants a new right-back as soon as possible, once stating that Diogo Dalot was the only player in that position at the club, effectively confirming that Aaron Wan-Bissaka had no future in Manchester.

Having started his career in the Netherlands, Dumfries may well appeal to Ten Hag who has had a preference for signing players who have Eredivisie experience.

This includes Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, while he has also targeted the likes of Frenkie de Jong and Cody Gakpo.

For now, Dumfries will be hoping to seal Holland’s place in the round-of-16 when they play host nation Qatar on Tuesday.
