Celtic fans mock King Charles with ‘shove your coronation’ chant

Celtic fans made their opposition to a request to pledge allegiance to King Charles on coronation day known during Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers. The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen of the United Kingdom will take place at Westminister Abbey on Saturday.

Celtic beat Rangers 1-0 through Diogo Jota’s first-half header at Hampden Park, setting up a final against Inverness on June 3.

Less than a week before King Charles’ coronation at the other end of the country, tension was rife in Glasgow, as it always tends to be in Old Firm meetings.

Rangers fans paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth III’s successor by adorning flags with his face and setting red, blue and white pyro ablaze.

But Celtic’s support disputed a statement earlier in the day requesting the people of the UK to pledge their allegiance to King Charles on coronation day.

In X-rated fashion, the thousands of Hoops in attendance rallied together to sing: “You can shove your coronation up your a***.”

First Minister Humaz Yousaf, a Celtic fan, was in attendance as Ange Postecoglou’s side took an almighty step toward a domestic treble.

And as of Monday, over 315,000 people have viewed the clip on Twitter, with many Celtic fans seeing the funny side.

@loftinopanevino tweeted: “Is this the Coronation Chant we’re supposed to recite next week?”

@Gundersonguy wrote: “Ironically, it turns out the Celtic fans were the real kings all along.”

@LennyBr64521062 added: “I have always been proud of the Celtic support – we are always on the right side of history and none more so than today.”

It’s not the first time Celtic fans have chanted against the Royal Family at football games.

Last September, Sky Sports apologised to viewers after microphones picked up an offensive chant during a minute’s applause after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.

During a match against St. Mirren, 10 days after the Queen’s death, supporters in the away end at the Paisley 2021 Stadium were heard singing: “If you hate the Royal Family clap your hands.”

Fans also unfurled a banner that read the same, and UEFA has previously investigated Celtic for a banner that read ‘f*** the crown’ during a Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk.
