Celebrity chef John Mountain bans all vegans from restaurant after bad review

Celebrity chef John Mountain has implored vegans to “please go elsewhere” and declared his upscale Fyre restaurant is a “vegan-free zone”.

The former Great British Menu star posted a message to Facebook that read: “Sadly all vegans are now banned from Fyre for mental health reasons. We thank you for your understanding.”

The chef also shared his message on Instagram adding: “Yep. I’m done. #vegan #not #pleasegoelsewhere #veganfreezone #nomorevegan.”

The decision to ban vegans from his restaurant came after a potential diner contacted him about the vegan options served at the eatery, which is located in the northern Perth suburb of Connoll.

He responded to the message stating that gnocchi and vegetables were available but later became occupied with a private party when the customer arrived.

The customer then lodged a complaint before leaving a scathing review on Facebook about being unhappy she was charged $32 for a plate of vegetables.

In a Facebook message, she said: “It’s incredibly important nowadays that restaurants can accommodate everyone, and to not be able to have actual plant-based meals shows your shortcomings as a chef. If you don’t get with the times, I don’t hold out faith that your restaurant will be the one that does.”

The chef replied: “As for vegans/vegetarians being a very low minority, especially in the northern burbs, I try to accommodate everyone else.

“Thanks for your negative review… please feel free to share your s**tty experience, and I look forward to not seeing you again.”

He signed off the message by calling the customer “childish” and saying: “You and all your vegan mates can all go and enjoy your dishes in another venue. You are now banned.”

The Facebook post, which so far has gathered over 980 comments, has had a mixed response.

Some users praised the move, with one commenter saying

But the move has sparked anger within the vegan community, with one angry user say

This isn’t the first time that John Mountain has caused controversy. He hit the headlines in 2012 after swearing at Marcus Wareing when appearing on BBC Two’s Great British Menu. The Chef said “f**k it” in response to being scored just two out of 10 for his fish dish.
