CBSE increases competency-based questions in 2023 board exams – Times of India
The CBSE will increase the percentage of competency-based questions in the coming 2023 board exams for classes X and XII. Till 2022, the boards had included 30% of competency-based questions in class X boards and 20% in class XII.
The board has decided to increase the percentage of competency questions by 10%, amounting to 40% and 30% in class X and XII boards, respectively.
This information was given by Annapurna Devi, junior education minister in response to the written question raised in the Lok Sabha. The increase of competency-based questions would qualitatively enhance the logical orientation of the students and prevent them from resorting to rote memorisation of academic concepts. CBSE aims to increase 50-60% of competency-based questions in the board exams by 2025. To achieve this, teachers are encouraged to adopt qualitative pedagogies such as art-integrated learning, sports-integrated learning, project-based learning, and toy-based teaching to make learning joyful and experiential.
Speaking to Education Times, Joseph Emmanuel, director, CBSE (Academics), says, “The decision to increase the percentage of competency-based questions in the board exams for classes X and XII in 2023 has been taken as part of NEP 2020. These questions will assess high order thinking skills (HOTS) among students and will discourage rote learning culture. The percentage of competency-based questions that would be asked in X board exams in 2023 has been increased from 30% to 40% and 20% to 30% for XII board exams. The long-term plan will be completed by 2025. This is part of examination reform initiative which will transform the classroom learning.”
Teachers will have to adopt innovative teaching methods. A multi-disciplinary approach to teaching students would make learning more engaging for students. Apart from these, many new and innovative pedagogies are being employed by teachers to teach the concepts to students and connect them with real-life situations.”
“Students are being prepared to answer the competency-based questions since 2019 and hence it is not a sudden change, but a gradual change. However, now students will be taught in such a way that it prepares them to deal with this 10% increase of competency-based questions that will be asked in the board exams of 2023. Also, as the number of competency-based questions would increase over the years, the preparation for the same shall also keep pace,” adds Emmanuel.
Sudha Acharya, chairperson, National Progressive Schools Conference (NPSC), says, “The board will gradually increase the number of competency-based questions to avoid rote memorisation among students as NEP 2020 focuses on clarity of concepts-based understanding. We are encouraging teachers to map the concepts of curriculum, by interconnecting different subjects to make students’ acquire an analytical approach.”
