Cash machine warning: Savers urged to identify ‘tell-tale signs’ as ATM scams emerge
“Fraudsters have always been one step ahead of the authorities and are using increasingly sophisticated methods to extract money from ATM’s. The lengths that they go to are impressive involving fake ATM fronts, fake independent machines and involve sophisticated technology.
“Tell-tale signs can be a spongy keypad, a wide or loose card slot or broken parts, pinhole cameras or a loitering group.
“If caught criminals can expect to be charged with theft (maximum seven years imprisonment), and making or supplying articles for use in frauds (maximum 10 years imprisonment), as well as other ancillary offences such as possessing a device to clone cards of offences under the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981.
“Given ATM’s are a convenient tool not only for us, but also the financial institutions who implement them, they ought to be responsible for ensuring that they are tamper proof. Given the recent TikTok video highlighting just how easy these scams are, the financial institutions with whom we trust our money ought to carry out an urgent review and risk assessment of their devices.
“If you suspect an ATM has been tampered with, withdraw and call the police. The criminals may be watching.”
