Carrie’s hilarious Project throwback photo
The Project host Carrie Bickmore marked the show’s 13th birthday by posting an adorably dorky throwback photo on Instagram overnight, showing the original line-up looking fresh-faced and oh-so-2009.
Bickmore was flanked by original co-hosts Charlie Pickering and Dave Hughes in the publicity picture, she wearing skinny leg jeans and a shoulder-baring top and with her hair sprayed into a bouffant.

“Happy 13th birthday Project. I forgot they made zips that small,” she captioned the photo – and others were eager to join in the good-natured roasting too.
“Was Hughesy dressed by an accountant from the 1980s?” asked comedian Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann.
“I think the boys borrowed their suits from their dads for this shoot,” Grant Denyer commented.
As for Carrie’s look: “It barely covers your vagina!” wrote Project colleague Rachel Corbett.
“That was when fashion meant something. Happy birthday legends,” Hughes said.
There are plenty more photos from The Project’s early years. We dug into our archives to find a few.
Here’s another early pic of the trio, Hughesy apparently in that same suit borrowed from a 1980s accountant – and Pickering in his very best cardigan:
Another early photo, from a time we all forgot when Ruby Rose was a regular member of the panel:
And this photo from back in 2014, announcing Peter Helliar as a new addition to the cast:
The Project first aired as The 7pm Project on July 20, 2009, with Bickmore, Pickering and Hughes on hosting duties. Thirteen years on, Bickmore is the only original member of the panel left – and she recently took a well-earned break, visiting the UK and Europe with her family for several months.
Making the announcement on-air in March, Bickmore explained that she’d “been wanting to do it for a while” but that for “lots of reasons, timing hasn’t been right”.
“But we figure it’s never going to be the perfect time to go and it’s something we really want to do before my son starts his final years at school so we’re doing term two in the UK.”
But after returning home this month, she confessed that the three-month trip had tested her family at times.
“It didn’t all go to plan, and there were lots of times when it was really, really hard. Living away with three kids – kids are hard enough at the best of times, and living in a new place without your support network around … Addy (Bickmore’s three-year-old daughter Adelaide) found it really hard for a long time,” she said.
“She was a baby born around Covid times, and just likes being at home. All of a sudden we were dragging her on planes all over the world.”
Meanwhile, there were tense scenes on last night’s episode of The Project, when former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson dropped by for a live interview about his solo career. But the singer appeared visibly uncomfortable with questions about his former bandmates Liam Payne and Harry Styles, telling the panel “I see what you’re doing” and accusing his interviewers of “sh*t-stirring.”
