Carlton warned against haphazard Hardwick chase

Kane Cornes has cast doubts on whether Damien Hardwick is the man to lead Carlton out of its current hole, suggesting the club needs to continue backing Michael Voss.

Voss has found himself squarely in the hot seat after the Blues slumped to their seventh loss in their last eight matches, with the latest result a 34-point loss to Essendon on Sunday night.

Both Carlton CEO Brian Cook and president Luke Sayers have publicly backed Voss in recent weeks, but the club’s rabid fanbase could potentially force a swift decision.

Voss is contracted through to the end of next season, but Carlton has been linked with Hardwick since his own departure from Richmond last month.

Cornes wasn’t convinced the three-time premiership winner would be the right man to turn things around at Carlton.

”I think the worst thing they can do is sack the coach now,” he told Nine’s Footy Classified.

“Damien Hardwick said he needs a break, so the last person I’m going to be appointing is Damien Hardwick.

“Carlton needs someone who is all in and mentally and physically up for the challenge.”

Cornes said Carlton’s powerbrokers needed to ask themselves a key question before pulling the trigger on yet another coaching change.

“I want to know what the problem is at Carlton and I want them to tell me what it is,” he said.

“I listened to Michael Voss after the game and they keep alluding to a problem but they don’t tell us, and it’s on repeat.

“I need to know from Carlton – is it the list or is it the coach? If it’s the list, it’s a bigger problem than if it’s the coach, because if it’s the list they have to blow the whole thing up like Collingwood did two years ago.”
