Actress and animal rights advocate Carla Abellana expressed support to a relatively new regulation that gives protection to animals from abuse while in use in media and entertainment.
Abellana attended the media conference arranged by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) recently, in which she discussed that animals get hurt even in controlled places such as a TV show or film.
That is why Administrative Circular No. 5, or the Guidelines for the humane use of animals in the media and entertainment, issued by the Bureau of Animal Industry was a welcome development for the animal rights advocacy groups, like the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), of which she is a member.
AC5 was signed on May 26, 2022, and became in effect one year after its publication.
“Progress for animal welfare in our country!” she said. “Administrative Circular No. 5… was finally approved, signed and published by our government. This means that all animals are now and should be protected and humanely treated during the filming or taping of shows, films and commercials.”
Abellana, who has long been an advocate for animals expressed her thanks to the government agencies behind the regulation, as well as fellow advocates in the media and entertainment industry.
“Hooray for artists against animal cruelty! I cannot be more proud of PAWS, the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Animal Industry,” she said, adding that it now high time to ensure the well-being of pets and animals “behind and in front of cameras!” EDV
