Carers During Covid-19
Covid-19 was a pandemic that changed our very lifestyle which still affects us to this day. During this time we clapped for our Nurses and key workers every week showing our gratitude. However, one group of people were overlooked working in a place surrounded by the most vulnerable people and those protecting them were carers and all members of the care home. They look after parents, grandparents and great-grandparents keeping them safe providing the very best care as well as being a trusted friend.
When covid hit all care homes were on lockdown and isolated to protect their residents. Here I’m interviewing a carer who worked during the pandemic to find out what life was like looking after the elderly.
What was your role in the care home?
So my role in the care home is to make sure that the residents are well looked after and that they have the right care. To have and also make sure that their well-being
How did your care home react to the rising COVID cases in the UK?
Well, at first it’s a bit manic. But then when you get used to it. We know more about COVID than you know. It relaxes a little bit. Yeah, it’s like light must go.
When did your care home go into lockdown roughly?
End of March beginning of April
So it was before the national lockdown, What were your feelings on the lockdown?
Lockdown well. To tell you the truth. Boring, boring, but it needs to be so that we can protect the people who we look after.
What was day-to-day life like during the Lockdown especially in the care home?
in the care home, it’s quite hard, especially for the residents, especially when they need to stay in their rooms for I think it’s two weeks or more than that. They need to stay there because of the rising COVID cases and when they finally got out of the room. Some of them are not themselves and are mobility-wise affected.
How did the pressure of COVID impact your mental health?
Very stressed, we had to stick with the staff you had if one of the staff has COVID. Then of course it’s very hard to find. Agency, because we’re not allowed to or stuck to work. So we need to work overtime.
During your second lockdown, how hard did COVID hit your care home?
The second one was not as bad as the first one.
So was there a significant change between the first lockdown and the second lockdown?
The first lockdown. Many residents are affected also staff, but the second one we, which is not much. You know the first one is people were sent to hospital, people died.
Do you think during the pandemic care homes were overlooked by many people?
In some cases, yes. Because other some people from the outside think that you know there’s no COVID because we put all the restrictions. As you know they’re not allowed to come in. They can only stay outside, but some people. Said there’s no COVID And they are.
Do you think the government should have done more to support care homes?
Well, they could have done more, but then you know it’s. It’s a new thing for us. You know, discovered we don’t know what is it. We don’t have enough information. You know how it affects other people and things because it’s just a learning thing so.
How has your care home come out of lockdown since now COVID is essentially gone according to the government, do you still keep regulations?
Yes, not from the government, but from the management. They are there just for safety.
