Captain Marvel Perfected Her Worst Enemy’s Evil Plan – And It Is Awesome
Captain Marvel’s shocking new powers have done what her greatest nemesis never could, and it might lead to a whole new generation of cosmic heroes in the future.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Captain Marvel #36, available now from Marvel.
Carol Danvers has finally uncovered the devastating truth behind Vox Supreme’s evil plans. As unsettling as a homegrown army of evil Marvels might be, there is one development that stands out as even more disturbing. Vox Supreme may have failed in creating his own grotesque breed of warriors, but Captain Marvel did not. In fact, Carol succeeded in every way that her nemesis could not, and she never even realized what she was doing.
Captain Marvel and the new Binary she created have made quick work in freeing their allies from Vox Supreme’s clutches. Unfortunately, there was still the rest of her enemy’s black-suited army of Marvels to contend with, all of which were comprised of the same semi-sentient Sludge that Carol had faced off against back on the current Kree home world. The villain’s plot made it clear that he was intent on creating not just his own army, but life itself in his own image. Captain Marvel #36 (by Kelly Thompson, Sergio Davila, Sean Parsons, Roberto Poggi, Erick Arciniega, and VC’s Clayton Cowles) also reveals Carol was Vox’s latest inspiration, though that is not surprising considering Carol Danvers has done precisely what he set out to accomplish in the first place.
When Carol was trapped in a metal coffin and set adrift in outer space back in Captain Marvel #34 by Kelly Thompson and Sergio Davila, she took inspiration from Monica Rambeau’s own creative use of her powers to escape. By channeling her energy into a focused form, Carol effectively birthed a whole new hero, one made entirely of her own energy and resembling Carol from her time spent as Binary. In fact, that is precisely the name this new entity has taken for itself following the battle with Vox Supreme and his dark Marvels. While it was previously unclear whether this being was its own sentient lifeform or just an extension of Carol’s abilities, its status as an independent being has been firmly cemented. Now the only question left is whether the new Binary will be one of a kind or the beginning of something unlike the Marvel Universe has ever seen.
The fact that Carol Danvers was able to use her cosmic abilities to create a whole new being is shocking on its own, but the potential for Binary to be one of many could shake the Marvel Universe to its core. Binary was able to burn Vox Supreme almost entirely with a single massive blast of her own power, and while Carol does seem marginally weaker while not merged with her other self, there is no indication of any great loss for either of them due to the other’s existence. If that truly is the case, then the idea that either Carol or Binary could create further Marvels of their own accord would be a perfectly reasonable one. Without any major threat to provoke that from either of them, it doesn’t seem very likely, but the possibility matters far more than the implementation at this point. Hopefully, if things ever come to that point, the next generation of Marvels will be fighting on the right side of the battlefield.
