BHUBANESWAR: The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and Capital Hospital Bhubaneswar on Thursday received necessary approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start a postgraduate (PG) course from this academic session.
The medical assessment and rating board (MARB) of the NMC reviewed the assessors’ report regarding faculty, their experience, publication, and other teaching facilities including infrastructure available at the PGIMER and Capital Hospital for starting of MS (general surgery) for the academic year 2022-23.
The MARB has approved five seats in MS (general surgery). It was a letter of intent. “The acceptance letter may be sent within one week from the date of issue of this letter to enable the MARB to issue a letter of permission for the academic year 2022-23,” said the MARB official in the letter of intent.
On August 14, the health and family welfare department of the state had asked the PGIMER to submit undertakings before the NMC to start the classes of PG courses at this institution.
The institute had submitted an undertaking before the NMC for obtaining letter of permission for starting PG courses (MS) in orthopaedics for two seats and in general medicine for five seats. It will be affiliated to Utkal University for the academic session, 2022-23, official sources said.
The health and family welfare department had given five assurances in the undertaking which were submitted by the institute. According to the undertaking, the state government will provide all infrastructural facilities in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, buildings, equipment and hospital facilities as per NMC norms.
“No student shall be admitted in the PG courses till the formal permission of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), NMC. Adequate funds shall be provided in the state budget for development of facilities within the stipulated time period,” read the undertaking of the government.
The MARB reserves the right to withdraw/cancel/revoke the letter of permission if it comes to the notice that the permission has been obtained from MARB by misrepresentation of fact or fraud.
The institute is planning to start PG courses in six departments.
