Spring and summer are upon us, meaning better weather and, more importantly, a new wardrobe.

Whether you’re shopping your stash or looking to invest in new pieces, it’s time to switch up your ‘fits.

But with the abundance of fashion content online, it can be hard to figure out your own personal sense of style.

It’s perhaps no surprise that personal styling service Stitch Fix found over a third of Brits feel ‘overwhelmed’ by trends.

Enter, the fashion vision board. You might have made a vision board for your long-term life goals, but this tool can also help you figure out your style for the season ahead.

It’s about being authentic to yourself and cutting through the noise of trends that don’t work for you.

Stitch Fix’s expert stylist, Emily Stott, says: ‘Curating a fashion vision board is a practice that requires care and attention, to help you discover your unique, personal style.

‘It allows you to tap into the notion of “seeing is believing” and “manifesting” to achieve your desired goal.’

Emily has used vision boards for 10 years and finds them to be helpful in streamlining the look you want to achieve.

Here’s how to make one – whether it’s physical or digital.

Embrace online inspiration

Social media is full of varying looks and stylists.

Emily recommends saving your favourite outfits, and creating a collection by season or style, such as ‘SS23’ or ‘party outfits’.

She adds: ‘Make sure to search for relevant hashtags like #grwm (get ready with me), #ootd (outfit of the day) and #streetstyle, as your algorithms will update based on what you search, follow and save, giving you even more relevant style inspo.

‘The more you save, the more you’ll be able to envision the looks that you love and want to adopt for yourself.’

Tap into your favourite references

Consider what you consume on a day-to-day basis.

Emily says: ‘What are you listening to, watching or reading that is inspiring you?

‘Make a log of these, taking a deeper dive into what exactly lights the spark of inspiration. Is it a colour, an era, a mood or attitude?

‘We’ve seen this very recently, with the rage of Bridgerton and regencycore, or the nation’s crazed obsession over the newly released Daisy Jones & The Six series and its 70’s hazy aesthetic.

‘It’s important not to focus on literal fashion thinking here – think lateral. The broader, the better.’

Check out the runway

Emily says: ‘It may sound obvious, but another place to draw inspiration from is the new season catwalks (or archival, if that’s more your thing) – showing across all fashion capitals.

‘Fashion shows are considered art in their own right, which is why drawing inspiration from the shows, more holistically, can be great when you find yourself up against a creative block.’

You can look again at the colours, materials, textures and silhouettes, rather than the outfits as a whole.

Emily adds: ‘Mix and match the outfit pieces in your imagery too, by chopping up the photos and pairing different pieces, collections and brands together.’

Look local

Don’t ignore what’s right in front of you – there are people and places on your doorstep to be inspired by.

Emily says: ‘Visit your favourite places, or go back to your roots by exploring your hometown neighbourhoods, making a note of how the people, in the places that inspire you, are styling their outfits.

‘If you’re brave, maybe even ask strangers with good style where they bought certain items, or what their favourite brands are.’
