Want to give your brown hair a subtle yet expensive-looking upgrade?

Candlelit brunette is the latest trending hair colour that embodies cosiness, light and warm – things we are all craving right now, as we head into the depths of winter.

For those not clued-up, hair expert Nicole Petty, from Milk + Blush, explains that candlelit hair is all about intensifying the natural colour variation of the hair, while maintaining a natural look.

She tells Metro.co.uk: ‘Where dark-coloured hair can look flat and one-dimensional, this trend encourages adding low-contrast and mid-tone highlights to give the hair warmth and a reflective feel, as if it were glistening in firelight or candlelight.

‘Recently rocked by celebrities such as Kaia Gerber, Ashley Park, and Hailey Bieber, it is the perfect style for brunettes looking to add a subtle change to their hair and give it a more expensive look.’

And the best part is that it’s a universally-flattering option.

Nicole adds: ‘Best of all, it can be personalised to suit every tone, face shape, hair type and texture.’

To get the look, Nicole says it’s best to trust salon professionals, who can offer advice on which tones will be most-suited to your hair and give you the best results.

She says: ‘Ask for fine highlights that are one or two shades lighter than your natural hair colour and your stylist can take care of the rest.

‘Warm and cool-toned skin types suit different tones; honey, caramel, amber, and golden-brown highlights will better suit warm skin tones, as they can maintain and enrich warm complexions.

‘Meanwhile, those with cool-toned skin will better suit mocha and rich-chocolate shades which can brighten the complexion without washing you out with additional warmth.’

Nicole says these highlights should be added to specific areas of the hair that you would like to enhance or add more volume to.

But she also stresses that if you have never dyed your hair before, or you’re after a more understated look, start with more subtle tones to test the style out before adding brighter highlights.
