Canada is strong in the field with Mitton, Tutti and Gleadle throwing into the mix
Camryn Rogers is Canada’s hammer throwing sensation who seems to smash her own national record just about every time she competes. She is Canada’s highest ranked thrower — fourth in the world — and her rise comes at a time when Canadian women are finding success across all throwing events. Here are Canada’s top women in the other events:
Sarah Mitton
Brooklyn, N.S.
Shot put
The 25-year-old set a new Canadian shot-put record with her 19.58-metre throw at a meet in Hamilton last month. She is the first woman to throw over 19 metres on Canadian soil and she’s in the midst of a breakout season, throwing over 19 metres on a regular basis. Mitton has already booked her ticket to July’s world championships in Eugene, Ore., and August’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, U.K. She competes at the Canadian track and field championships in Langley, B.C., on Saturday.
Trinity Tutti
Welland, Ont.
Discus
The 22-year-old is closing in on Canada’s four-decade-plus national record in the discus and working her way up the world rankings. She won another Canadian championship title Thursday.
Liz Gleadle
Vancouver
Javelin
This three-time Olympian made her debut at the London 2012 Games where she became the first Canadian woman to qualify for a javelin final since 1968. Now, at 33, after numerous injuries and comebacks, she is still throwing strongly. Gleadle is a 10-time Canadian champion who is competing at the championships Saturday and, according to the world rankings, has qualified for next month’s worlds.
