Can Marvel’s Best Superhero Marriage Ever Happen in the MCU?

While it was alive, the marriage between T’Challa and Ororo Munroe was one of the most celebrated pairings in the history of comic books.

Maintaining a healthy romantic relationship is easily one of the hardest aspects of a superhero’s life thanks to the many complications linked to their careers. However, some have managed to overcome those hurdles and sustain a long-term relationship with their partner, and a select few have even found an opportunity to pop the question and tie the knot. Over the years, there have been many prominent superhero marriages, but few have been as well-received as the marriage between Black Panther and Storm.

While it was alive, the marriage between T’Challa and Ororo Munroe was one of the most celebrated pairings in the history of comic books. Unfortunately, like many other beloved comic book marriages, the union between the king of Wakanda and the queen of the newly-terraformed Mars was eventually undone, but the Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of Twentieth Century Fox in 2019 gave many fans hope that the introduction of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would give the relationship a second chance. Sadly, the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman the following year put an end to those hopes, but there’s still a chance that a similar romance could blossom between the MCU’s Storm and another Wakandan hero.

Black Panther and Storm’s history with one another is so inclined towards romance that it could be compared to a classic fairy tale. The two first met by chance as teenagers while T’Challa was traveling across Africa during a rite of passage, and a mutual attraction immediately formed between them. Although T’Challa ended his burgeoning relationship with Ororo to continue his royal training, the two quickly resumed their courtship after they met again as adults. Following T’Challa’s proposal, the two were wed in a lavish ceremony in Black Panther #18 (by  Reginald Hudlin, Scott Eaton, Kaare Andrews, Klaus Janson, Dean White, and Randy Gentile) that was attended by many of their closest friends within the superhero community, and their marriage remained strong for many years. Sadly, their union came to an abrupt end during the Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event after a Phoenix Force-empowered Namor flooded Wakanda, killing thousands and driving a grief-stricken T’Challa to banish all mutants from his kingdom.

During their time together, Black Panther and Storm were one of the most popular superhero pairs within the Marvel Universe itself and amongst Marvel Comics fans. Their impending marriage made headlines across the world and the wedding itself was seen as a landmark moment in comics regarding representation for people of color. Many of the Marvel Universe’s heroes of color were invited to the ceremony as guests of honor, and the event itself became something of a symbolic celebration of how far representation had come since Marvel Comics was first founded. Not only that but Black Panther and Storm were simply a strong couple that enjoyed powerful chemistry, with each bringing something into the relationship that the other lacked. Under their shared rule, Wakanda truly shed the shackles of its isolationist past and took several major steps towards becoming the global superpower that it is today, and the pair remained a high-profile celebrity couple until their divorce.

Before Chadwick Boseman’s passing, many fans speculated that the introduction of mutants into the MCU could lead to the two heroes forming a relationship similar to that of their comic counterparts, but the actor’s tragic death has made that impossible. However, there’s still a chance that Storm could end up with a Wakandan hero. Winston Duke’s M’Baku is the most obvious candidate, given the rumors that the character will play an expanded role in the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but there are several other possibilities. What If..? introduced the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, so Storm could end up dating a more heroic version of Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger. Or, if Kevin Fiege stays true to his public commitment to incorporate more diversity into the MCU, perhaps Storm and Letitia Wright’s Shuri could become the franchise’s first leading same-sex couple.

Chadwick Boseman’s passing leaves the future of the MCU’s Wakanda uncertain, but there’s still a chance that Storm will play a part in shaping it. With her incredible power and wisdom, the X-Men’s long-time second-in-command could be an invaluable addition to the heroes of Wakanda.
